QuickBooks™ Point of Sale Will Not Open Company Database

Once in a while, you get a PC update that can throw your whole operation into a tizzy. This one was definitely a troublemaker. If you cannot start your Point of Sale server it is usually due to one of two reasons:

  1. 1) Database is corrupt. (see Point Of Salet on how to tell if your Point of Sale database is corrupt.
  2. 2) Software update has interfered with reading your Point of Sale database file.

Since we have outlined the steps to determine if your Point of Sale database is corrupt in a different article , we will now focus on steps to take to see if your PC has been hit with a “nasty” update that has compromised your

QuickBooks™ Point of Sale software. Try these solutions:

 

Solution 1: Allow Point of Sale services to interact with the desktop

  1. 1) Close Point of Sale.
  2. 2) Click the Windows Start button, type Services.msc, and then press Enter.
  3. 3) Configure Intuit Entitlement Service:
    1. Double-click the Intuit Entitlement Service v#. (If there is more than one, choose the highest number version).
    2. Click the Log On tab.
    3. Select Local System Account and Allow Service to Interact with Desktop.
    4. Click Apply and/or OK.
    5. Check the General Tab to see if status is Started
      1. 1) Start Service, or stop and then start again.
  4. 4) Restart QuickBooks™ Point of Sale and see if Company will Log in now.
  5. 5) If not, configure QuickBooks™ Point of Sale Database Manager:
    • Double-click the QuickBooks™ Point of Sale Database Manager X (where X is the highest number listed).
    • Click the Log on tab.
    • Select Local System Account and Allow Service to Interact with Desktop
    • Click Apply and/or OK.
  6. 6) Open Point of Sale. If you continue to see the error, try Solution 2.

Solution 2: Rename the Point of Sale data folder

  1. 1) Close Point of Sale.
  2. 2) Click the Windows Start button, type Services.msc, and then press Enter.
  3. 3) Right-click QuickBooks™ Point of Sale Database Manager X (where X is the highest number listed) and choose Stop. Leave this window open.
  4. 4) Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Open Windows Explorer (Windows XP: chooseExplore).
  5. 5) Navigate in the left window to the data folder:
  6. 6) Right-click the folder that matches your company name and choose Rename.
  7. 7) Enter an X before the name and press Enter. Close the window.
  8. 8) Return to the Services window, right-click QuickBooks™ Point of Sale Database Manager X and choose Start.
  9. 9) Open Point of Sale, select your renamed company file and attempt to open it. After it opens, you can rename it back if you wish:
    • Versions 2013 and 10: Choose File > Company Operations > Rename company
    • Versions 9 and below: Choose File > Company Data > Rename
  10. 10) I know this sounds strange, but make sure the Point of Sale folder name is short. What is “Short”, you ask? Good question; I would try to make it less than 10 characters with no spaces.

Solution 3: Find out if there are any updates that are causing the problems.

  1. 1) In the “Start” menu, click on, “Run” and enter in “MSCONFIG”.
  2. 2) Under the “Services” tab, select, “Disable all”.
  3. 3) Reselect all the Intuit/Point of Sale services available. These would include:
    1. 1) Entitlement Client
    2. 2) Intuit Update Service v where is the version.
    3. 3) QuickBooks™ CFMonitorService
    4. 4) Intuit QuickBooks™ FCS
    5. 5) QuickBooks™ Point of Sale Database Manager v where is the version.
    6. 6) QuickBooks™ IDPService
    7. 7) QuickBooks™DB where is the version.
    8. 8) Any services that allow your tech (us) to help you. (for example, any LogMeIn services).
    9. 9) Try to start QuickBooks™ Point of Sale and open your actual company file now. If it works, that means you have to later (after store hours) narrow down which service it is that caused the problem. Once you do, you need to remove/disable that service.

Special Note: If you have renamed your database file and have client machines that are accessing the database server, you will need to delete the following files on each client machine:

  1. 1) C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8\*.*
  2. 2) C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks™ Point of Sale 11.0\Ini\WSActivity.xml

This should enable the client workstations to reconnect to your new company file.
